Baker Audio Visual Improves the Game-Day Experience
The home of The Atlanta Hawks (NBA), the Atlanta Dream (WNBA) and host to many more top-level events, Philips Arena was looking to upgrade their game-day audio-video presentation. The 18,000+ seat arena was still using a 15-year-old audio system along with video panels on a center-hung scoreboard. They tapped our team to work with audiovisual designer Mark Graham of WJHW to create and deliver a high-tech, high-impact experience that could elevate the fan experience to a whole new level.
Delivering a more robust, intelligible audio experience
Our approach was to completely overhaul the audio system with equipment manufactured by Harman International’s JBL brand, the official audio partner of the NBA. We integrated an exploded cluster array design including (8) six-box cluster arrays, each one housing (3) mid-high and (3) low-frequency PD series JBL speaker cabinets. In addition, we installed (24) dual 18’’ diver subwoofer cabinets to provide low-end frequency support to drive the essence of the audio experience, and replaced all amplifiers with Harman Crown series models. The project required we complete the work in a compressed 60-day time frame, working around the arena’s constant events. To complete the install on time, our team worked nights, weekends and any free hour available, coordinating every detail so that when the final switchover took place; everything was ready for show time.
Giving clients the ability to amaze their audiences
The new audiovisual presentation which features a floor projection system has made a dramatic difference in the game day fan experience. Says David Schindler, VP of Production and Creative Services at Philips Arena, “The PA is crystal clear so fans can easily understand all the content, and it packs a real punch when needed. You can feel the arena vibrate during our opening 3D Projection sequence, and it gives you goosebumps.” In today’s market, sporting venues have to offer the highest level of entertainment to stay competitive, retain their current fan base as well as attract newcomers. With our help, attending a game at Philips Arena is now a must-do activity for sports fans.
